Bashu's Igusa Rugs are made with domestically sourced igusa, specifically from Yatsushiro, Kumamoto Prefecture.
It is said that about 80% of igusa currently on the market in Japan is imported from China,
but we are committed to using domestically sourced igusa.
Among domestic sources,
the reason we choose Yatsushiro, Kumamoto Prefecture,
is its quality.
Vast plains and a mild climate.
The igusa from Yatsushiro, blessed with abundant water sources since ancient times,
is known for its exceptionally high moisture content.
Igusa with high moisture content
is less likely to break when pulled,
allowing for tight weaving,
and that difference changes the feel underfoot.
This is why Bashu's igusa rugs
are so soft and comfortable.

Furthermore, thick and high-quality igusa is also effective in combating humidity.
It absorbs moisture on humid days
and releases it on dry days.
Aka. a "natural air purifier."
This is also why Japan, with its high humidity, has preserved its unique "tatami culture."

our parents' house in the countryside, Grandma's house?
